Connect With Us
The C&O Canal Trust, as the official nonprofit partner of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park (NHP), works in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) and local communities located along the 184.5 mile canal towpath, from Georgetown in the District of Columbia, to Cumberland, Maryland, to raise funds to preserve the Park for future generations and to broaden support through programs and volunteer opportunities. The C&O Canal NHP ranks as the highest-visited historical park within the National Park System and is considered one of the nation’s most popular parks with millions of visitors each year. The Trust offers many programs throughout the year to connect communities and visitors alike with this unique and historic Park. Our annual Canal Community Days hosted by the Trust at various locations throughout the Park, bring people into the park as volunteers to participate in beautification and trash removal projects. Canal For All engages BIPOC, differently-abled, LGBTQIA+, and other underrepresented or disadvantaged communities to provide opportunities for education, stewardship, and volunteerism that are safe, welcoming, and inclusive for all. Canal Quarters allows visitors to spend the night in one of our 7 restored lockhouses in the park. Canal Towns Partnership is an economic and community development program that assists the communities to reap the multiple benefits of trail-based tourism and recreation. The Trust also fundraises to support programs run by the C&O Canal NHP. Canal Classrooms is an NPS program for K-12 students built on STEAM-based curricula (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math). Students can expect to be fully immersed in the natural and historical resources of the C&O Canal NHP. The Rare, Threatened, and Endangered (RTE) Plants program supports the preservation and protection of the Park's biodiversity. The C&O Canal NHP is one of the most biologically diverse national parks in the nation, and over 1500 plant species have been identified in the Park, including 200 RTE plants, some of which are globally rare or unique. The Towpath Forever campaign raises funds to repair the towpath and adjacent historic structures, such as culverts, that support the towpath structure, to improve safety and accessibility.
