Coffey, II - V.P. & Chief Development Officer 240. 566.3478 kcoffey@fmh.org For Immediate Release FMH ANNOUNCES FIRST ANNUAL BUSINESS HEALTH AWARD WINNERS (November 11, 2010 – Frederick, MD) – Frederick Memorial Healthcare System (FMH) and the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce hosted the first annual FMH Business Health Awards on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Dutch’s Daughter Restaurant. The FMH Business Health Awards program was established by FMH’s Business & Industry Committee to recognize area businesses that provide innovative health and wellness programs for their employees. This committee serves as one of five volunteer committees for the FMH Development Council and is responsible for providing service and education to the business community along with providing recognition to businesses that support FMH through the FMH Corporate Honor Roll program. “We've spent the last 18 months rebuilding our committee with a focus on providing service and education on healthcare to the local business community. The Business Health Awards program culminates almost a year of planning. We had two objectives for the program: First, to recognize businesses that have emerged as leaders in health promotion for their employees. Secondly, we hope that this annual program will help other businesses take more of a role in encouraging health and wellness in their organizations as a way to contain and even reduce their healthcare costs,” said Gary Sanbower, Chairman of the FMH Business & Industry Committee. To qualify for an award, the nominees were asked to highlight programs which focused on the following areas: health education, fitness, health assessments, and wellness benefits. The three award recipients were selected for their vision and commitment to a healthy workforce. Ric Adams, President & CEO of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce introduced the recipients in three different categories, based on the company’s number of employees; Small (1-100), Medium (101-500), and Large (501+). Mr. Adams said, “On behalf of the membership of the Chamber of Commerce, I am pleased to be a part of the festivities this evening. When FMH approached the Chamber about collaborating on this event, we jumped on board because health care costs are an important issue facing our business community.” AWARD RECIEPIENTS Small Company Business Health Award for 2010 (1 – 100 employees) Awarded to DynPort Vaccine Company LLC, a CSC company In this category, the recipient’s employees came together for a “Biggest Loser” series, where teams of four people challenged each other to achieve weight loss goals over 16 weeks. All together, 16 participants lost 250 pounds in a recent contest. In addition, DVC employees are currently participating in a three-month challenge to increase personal fitness levels, promote heart disease awareness, and raise funds for the American Heart Association. Medium Company Business Health Award for 2010 (101-500 employees) Awarded to Fugro EarthData, Inc. In this category, the recipient recently implemented a “Walk around the World” campaign designed to encourage participants to try out a more active lifestyle. Approximately two months in, Fugro EarthData employees racked up more than 14,000 miles. Beyond that, there was an active participation rate of over 50%. Large Company Business Health Award for 2010 (501 + employees) Awarded to U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Detrick, MD The winner in the Large Company category did a stellar job of exceeding the requirements set in the application. In FY 2008, U.S. Army Garrison - Fort Detrick implemented OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program which aims to encourage employees to report concerns and recommendation and empower employees to direct change in safety matters throughout the organization. The awareness and power of the employees resulted in a 75% decrease in work days lost from accidents from FY2008 to FY2009. U.S. Army Garrison - Fort Detrick is now ranked in the top 1% for safety out of 7 million workplaces nationwide. Through the organization’s fitness center, free personal training includes fitness routines, body composition, nutritional analysis and fitness assessments. Other free programs include: prevention of violence in the workplace, suicide prevention, scream-free parenting, staying positive in negative situations, and family well-being program. In addition, U.S. Army Garrison - Fort Detrick capitalizes on external resources by partnering with local cities, counties, community programs and services such as parks and recreation programs to benefit both the military and surrounding civilian communities. In addition to the awards presentation, Terry O’Malley, Vice President of Human Resources at Frederick Memorial Healthcare System, presented a program on workplace wellness and how it can help businesses contain and even reduce healthcare costs. Kleinhanzl, President & CEO said, “We’ve implemented health and wellness programs for our 2,600 employees and are seeing real progress in productivity, reduced absenteeism and enthusiasm among our employees to improve their personal health.
