For those of us who have been focused on biotech from the earliest days, it has seemed like life sciences "arrived" years ago.
But most of the world, especially patients benefitting from the human health applications of the technology, is just beginning to see its potential. As its benefits and capabilities become more clear, the funding is following. Following a tighter funding year since pre-SARS-CoV-2 times, the first quarter of 2024 shows promise for more robust life science investment.
As this Technical.ly article explains:
"In 2014, VCs invested about a quarter as much into pharma and biotech firms as in software. By last year it had grown to command about a third as much: $21 billion vs. $64 billion nationally, according to Pitchbook. And in the first three months of 2024, life sciences firms raised nearly 60% as much as software. The life sciences are here."
For those not as familiar with the distinction between "life sciences," "healthcare," "biotechnology," and "technology" the article provides a helpful breakdown. It also notes the significant life science employment bases, outside of Silicon Valley and Boston, of the DC/Baltimore, Greater Philly, and Pittsburgh regions, places where Facility Logix LLC is closely involved.
Why these locations? Simple: their ecosystems, driven by strong research universities and corporate research labs produce serial entrepreneurs spinning out new companies or licensing new technologies.
As the article notes, the challenges in energy and health will require complex solutions. Life sciences are playing a significant role, as will the impact of digital transformation on it.
